Please follow this link to register for a free student account to gain access to the SPARTAN test, provided by SACU and GROWS. The test is completely free of charge and generates three separate suggestion clouds; University, Careers and Apprenticeships. You can then explore these clouds extensively and look at relevant links, data and help. It’s an extremely useful tool generated by ex-UCAS employees to help students make decisions. Registration provides students with a hub for storing their results and managing their findings.

Aspirations

Gloucestershire Aspiration Programme (GAP)

We work closely in partnership with the Gloucestershire Aspiration Programme (GAP). Which is a partnership of Gloucestershire-based universities and further education colleges working together to provide young people with high quality impartial information and activities about education opportunities beyond GCSEs.

The partnership is called GROWS and is led by the University of Gloucestershire in partnership with Cirencester College, Gloucestershire College, Hartpury College, Royal Agricultural University and South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.

The Gloucestershire Aspiration Programme (GAP) is a government funded initiative that aims to raise aspiration to university level study (higher education) amongst pupils from targeted areas in Gloucestershire.

Funding has been given to work with those who meet the following criteria:

Pupils in years 9 to 11
Pupils whose postcodes have been identified as having progression gaps, that is; pupils who have the prior attainment (ability/qualifications) to go to university but in comparison to other postcodes have much lower numbers of pupils who go on to study at university level.
A postcode checker is available on our website www.grows.ac.uk should you want to check your own postcode.
Pupils are being identified as having the potential to study at university level, this is based on their predicted GCSE results, for years 9 to 11.

The project will deliver a range of activities and events, some of these activities will be open to all pupils in the school from Year 9 upwards.

However, a range of activities will only be available (or priority booking of spaces) to those who meet the above criteria. This is based on the funding and prior data of those who do and don’t go on to university, where research suggests that more support is needed for progression into university level study for children living in these areas.

Your child will be made aware what activity is open to them when it is promoted in school.

The GAP project is working with the school to provide a programme of a wide range of events and opportunities to support pupils in making informed decisions about their futures. GAP will fund and deliver a range of initiatives both in and out of school and for both pupils and parents / carers alike.

Activities include:

Access to residential events on a college/university campus
Motivational speakers to encourage pupils to think about their future goals/ambitions
Study skills speakers to help with revision techniques
Subject taster sessions for pupils to experience and learn about new subject/career areas
Access to online tools to help pupils discover potential careers and identify their own skills and strengths
Mentoring and buddying schemes to receive support from those who a similar age.
Current university students delivering sessions on their experiences and highlighting the pros and cons of university study.
Family/parent events about future educational options.

The Careerometer will give you current and update key information about jobs and careers sectors you are interested in and allow you to compare occupations. The widget will provide you with key information such as average pay, weekly hours of work and future employment prospects.

Simply type in the title of the job you are interested in and the widget will provide a series of options from which you can select the most relevant to you.

At The Dean Academy, every pupil should leave confident, articulate and culturally aware being able to pursue careers they are passionate about, contribute positively to society and live happy healthy and fulfilled lives. To achieve our mission, pupils must be exposed and appreciate the opportunities that a school and university education will afford them in terms of careers and quality of life. Therefore, we need to ensure that all pupils are aware of the post-16 pathways available to them. Students will receive personalised advice and support, and to coincide we will provide experiences of college, work and university that will allow them to make informed choices about their future.

In addition, pupils are explicitly taught the character traits, habits and routines that will enable them to become successful at home, and in the workplace as well as develop a refined sense of self, both as an individual and as part of a community through trips, visits, talks and enrichment. We are committed to implementing the Gatsby benchmarks to structure our programme and measure our success.
